Yoruba is a tonal language and a word can have several meanings depending on how it is pronounced . Examples (note the tonal marks)

ÒJÓ - a person's name

ÒJÒ - rain

OJO - coward

ÀṢÁ- Hawk

ÀṢÀ - Custom /habit

AṢA - troublesome

Tonal marks are only applied on vowels
